Winter Skate-tacular at Klamath Ice Sports

Klamath Ice Sports 18th Annual Figure Skating Spectacular, WINTER SKATE-TACULAR, took place on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. at the Bill Collier Ice Arena. This is a world class exhibition that celebrates the beauty, grace, and athleticism of figure skating.

This year's ice show was co-directed and choreographed by Autumn Morin and Joe Gorecki, professional skaters and coaches from the Portland area, where they both teach and coach all skating levels. Joe Gorecki will also perform in the show.

Headlining this year's event are two-time U.S. ladies champion, Alissa Czisny, two-time U.S. pair champions, Alexa and Chris Knierim, who are husband and wife, two-time U.S. ladies silver medalist, Polina Edmunds, and the up-and-coming U.S. junior ice dance team of Oona and Gage Brown, who are brother and sister. Also featured a group of talented competitive skaters from the Portland area, including Samuel Mindra, Kaizen Oudom, and Grace Clifford. Jason Graetz, a Canadian comedy skater, was also featured together with a group of local and regional skaters. All of the featured skaters are appearing in Klamath Falls for the first time.

Klamath had a wonderful show - thanks to all that made it a success. Coaches and skaters from Carousel Sherwood FSC and Portland ISC traveled down to participate and direct the show!

Portland lands new-ish skating championship event

Portland figure skating fans will get a chance to see some of the sport's finest technical purveyors early next year.

The 2016 Midwestern and Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships will take place Jan. 27 to Jan. 31 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. It's U.S. Figure Skating’s largest annual event, the group says.

Tickets are on sale through Rosequarter.com.

Local organizers include the Oregon Skating Council, the Oregon Sports Authority, Rose Quarter and Travel Portland.

More than 4,000 skaters and others are expected to attend, as organizers project the economic impact will exceed $3 million.

“We’ve already had more than 6,000 room nights booked by the synchronized skating teams and are expecting a multi-million dollar impact for our community in what is typically a slower month for tourism,” Drew Mahalic, CEO of the Oregon Sports Authority, said in a release.

“Portland hotels, restaurants and retail businesses will be absolutely packed with synchronized skaters and their families visiting from across the country.”

The synchronized figure skating teams include between eight and 20 skaters who perform routines in unison. The International Skating Union wants synchronized skating to become an Olympic sport.

1978 USFS Championships in Portland, Oregon

Oregon Skating Council (OSC) was formed as a traditional USFS inter-club association to permit other Oregon clubs to have a role in the planning and execution of the 1978 U.S. Figure Skating Nationals.

It was the first time the U.S. Championships were held in the Northwest since 1969 and first time that Oregon played host to the Championships. Integral to the bid to bring the event to the state was James Lawrence, President of the Oregon Skating Council, which was created by members of three Portland area clubs specifically for the purpose of bringing the event to the area. It was also the first time a multi-club co-operative had been established for the purpose of organizing the U.S. Championships, which drew one hundred entries 'from sea to shining sea'. -Skate Guard Blog
